Weaving together the personal, political, astrological
Relating To My Fat Body is a part of a cardinal-sign Fat Liberation program series for fat folks. During Cancer season, Erica Joy led Caring for the Fat Body; a group tapped into the care we provide ourselves and get from others or have been denied. With Relating To My Fat Body, Erica is hoping to get deeper into the full relationships fat folks have to ourselves, others, and community—whether they are beautiful, fraught, or nonexistent.
Libra is all about relationship, the give-and-take, balance. Relationships are inherent to our well-being, but bad relationships can be utterly detrimental to our livelihood. Beyond relationships, Libra is also associated with justice and fairness. How do we ensure we are not prioritizing peace over justice in our relationships? How can we make sure we show up with our values? Do our communities take into account the structural + social repercussions of fatphobia?
This group will grapple with these questions, and we’ll co-create a definition of Fat Liberation to ground our conversations. Continue reading to learn more about the program!
We will be meeting once a week throughout Libra season, September 22nd-October 21st. The tentative schedule is Fridays at 3pm MT (2pm PT/5pm ET). Our meetings will be somewhere between 1.5 and 2 hours. In an effort to increase privacy, the group will have the option to meet over Signal.* We’ll primarily use a circle-style to move through our time together, but as mentioned below, we’ll use our initial meeting to solidify how we format our sessions. I’m a fat Black non-binary queer bb (she/they) who has been learning to accept, love, and fight for my body and all fat bodies. I’m a Taurus sun with an Aries moon + rising.
I grew up on diets, exercise plans, food journals, and weigh-ins. For most of the formative years of my life, I’ve had to deprive and fight against my body. One of the few things I continue to have gratitude for when I got my social work degree, is having space to explore my fatness as an identity rather than a personal failure. my facilitation style + values
My chart guides me to facilitate in a silly, energetic, and grounded nature. Conversations are rooted in experiences, questions, laughter, and flexibility. My ultimate goal for any program I lead is to build a sense of trust, so folks feel it is okay to be vulnerable. I believe that folks in the space can have just as much to teach and support as I do. I bring the foundation of organization, discussion questions, facilitation, and my own experiences, BUT the group as whole builds the home with questions, experiences, and insights.
I aim to center the experiences and ideas of the most marginalized, as we have the greatest capacity to understand how messed up the world is and in turn the greatest capacity to have ideas to improve our circumstances. In the context of this group the most marginalized folks are Infinifat folks, disabled fat folks, Black fat folks, and QTPOC fat folks.

The sliding scale for this program is $200-500. The suggested amount is $300. When folks commit to an amount within $301-499, funds are used to subsidize a spot for some unable to pay $200, and when folks pay $500, a free spot opens.
